History Speaks Lecture Series – The War of 1812: Mr. Madison’s War
The History Speaks Lecture Series kicks off the 2012-2013 season with a presentation by Terry Lynch titled “The War of 1812: Mr. Madison’s War” from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Naper Settlement’s Century Memorial Chapel, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville. Lynch will portray President James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, who led the nation in a war against the British 200 years ago. For all ages. Weed Ladies Fall Floral Sale
The Weed Ladies fall floral sale features season floral arrangements with silk and dried florals and dried bouquets. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. Admission to the sale is free.
Chicago Victory Gardens: Yesterday and Tomorrow
Award-winning master gardener LaManda Joy will give a presentation on Chicago Victory Gardens from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 at Naper Settlement. Chicago led the nation in urban food production during World War II and how the city is poised again with the homegrown food revolution of this new generation. Joy is the author of the popular urban gardening blog, “The Yarden,” and is the founder of the Peterson Garden Project in Chicago. Naper Settlement’s Victory Garden and rain gardens also will be featured. The program is included with regular admission, which is $12 adults, $10 seniors; $8 youth (4-12), Naperville residents are free.
Bus & Bakery Tour
Visit four iconic Chicagoland bakeries to bring sweet treats home from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. Learn the history of the bakeries and sample their specialties. This unique experience begins with a special 90-minute behind-the-scenes tour of Labriola Baking Company. The tour includes transportation, tasting samples and lunch. Participants will have personal shopping time at each bakery. For adults. Register early as seats are limited. Registration accepted through Sept. 9. Tickets are $60 per person. History Bites Walking Tour
Travel through downtown Naperville for unique bites of history from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Harvest Pow Wow
Experience Native American dancing, cultural demonstrations, children’s games and crafts, special presentations and more during the Harvest Pow Wow to be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23. Firefighter Appreciation Day at Naper Settlement
Thank a firefighter from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 while celebrating the history of Naperville’s firefighters, viewing artifacts from the museum collections and getting an up close look at modern day equipment side-by-side with the historic 1874 Joe Naper pumper. Participate in a bucket brigade, learn about fire safety and try on firefighting gear. Included with regular admission, which is $12 adults, $10 seniors, $8 youth 4-12; Naperville residents are free.
