Mayor Ruben Pineda and Healthy West Chicago to Lead Walk in the Fight Against Heart Disease

Mayor Ruben Pineda and Healthy West Chicago to Lead Walk in the Fight Against Heart Disease on September 3, 2016

Mayor Ruben Pineda will join students and other community members in walk to battle heart disease and stroke on Saturday

What: In partnership with the National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention, Mayor Ruben Pineda and Healthy West Chicago will host West Chicago's first annual Move with the Mayor Challenge. The Mayor will join students and other community members on a 30-minute walk to highlight one of the leading causes of death nationwide -  heart disease and stroke, as well as ways to prevent it.

Who: Team Pineda led by Mayor Ruben Pineda, Healthy West Chicago led by Director Andi Cooper, elected officials and City leaders, residents, and students.

When: Register at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, for a 9:00 a.m. walk start. There will be a free pre-walk yoga stretch session offered by West Chicago resident Farrah Brown, owner of Thalia Soul Care, for all participants.

Where: The event will begin at Gary Elementary School, 130 E. Forest Avenue, and end at the same location. For an interactive map of the Move with the Mayor routes for the month of September, including Gary Elementary School, visit www.westchicago.org.

Why: Heart disease is a leading cause of death nationwide, and stroke is the fourth leading cause of death. Research has found walking as little as 30 minutes a day may cut the risk of heart disease by 40 percent. The walk is part of a campaign developed by the city and the National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention to encourage residents to walk with the Mayor for 30 minutes every Saturday in September, with a celebration scheduled for all participants on World Heart Day, September 29, 2016. Citizens of all ages are encouraged to track their steps and/or minutes of physical activity each day with an online weekly walking log found at www.westchicago.or

Interviews: The following individuals will be available for media interviews on the day of the walk:

  • Ruben Pineda, Mayor of West Chicago
  • Andi Cooper, Director of Healthy West Chicago
  • Fil Mendez Guipoco, Multicultural Initiatives Director, American Heart Association
  • John Miller, Senior Market Manager, Community Engagement, American Cancer Society, Inc.
