CIVIC AWARENESS SERIES BEGINS SEPTEMBER 21


Three programs this fall in partnership with League of Women Voters of Wheaton

Three upcoming programs at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center will focus on themes of civic awareness and encourage local participation in the democratic process. The series, presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Wheaton, is open to the public and free to attend:

  • Thursday, September 21, 7 pm

        “News Literacy: Fake or Not?”

Peter Adams from the News Literacy Project will speak about the evolution of various forms of misinformation and the tools available to combat it. Learn how news literacy can help us gain trust in the media and know what to believe. Note: a series-opening reception with cash bar and light appetizers begins at 6:15 pm and all are welcome.

  • Thursday, October 19, 7 pm

“Why We Need People to Run for Office”

Melissa Mouritsen Zmuda, associate professor of Political Science at the College of DuPage and author, will speak on the importance of running for local elections and making a difference in your own community. Gain insights into the process and learn more about why local government is so important.

  • Thursday, November 16, 7 pm

“Money in Politics: How Much is Too Much?”

Sarah Brune, Executive Director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, will present practical tools for keeping up with the fast-paced world of political money in Illinois and provide an extended question and answer session about what’s to come in 2018.

All three programs are free to attend (including parking) but advance registration is required. Online sign-up is through the League of Women Voters and limited to 100 attendees per event. Register at www.wheatonlwvil.org.

Discussion sessions will follow each presentation to help attendees brainstorm how they can put the speakers’ ideas into action. Coffee and dessert will be served.

Cantigny is open every day through October from 7 am to dusk. Hours are 9 am to dusk in November and December. A complete schedule of concerts, workshops and special events is posted online at Cantigny.org.
