Blooming Banners Added to the Streetscape in West Chicago to Welcome Summer & the Season of Gardening

A collection of striking botanical street banners that proclaim West Chicago in Bloom have been placed throughout the City to welcome summer and provide beauty and inspiration for novice and master gardeners, as well as for those that just enjoy the natural beauty of flowers. The botanicals also bring awareness to the City’s efforts to win national status as an America in Bloom City.

Set against a black background, highly detailed photographs of single blooms of a wide assortment  including parrot tulips, lilac, dahlias, orchids, and of course West Chicago’s official City flower the  purple coneflower, create a dramatic gallery of floral art. “It was time to replace our stock of summer banners,” said Rosemary Mackey, West Chicago’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator, “and it seemed like a natural choice in light of the efforts of all our community partners who are working so hard on the America in Bloom initiative.“

The theme also plays homage to the City’s garden-focused spring event, Blooming Fest, which brings garden enthusiasts to downtown West Chicago the third Saturday each May to purchase a wide array of plants and shrubs from the West Chicago Garden Club and other local vendors. Visitors of the festival also receive gardening tips and advice from organizations like the Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, Ball Horticultural Company, the Green Disciples of the First United Methodist Church of West Chicago, The GardenWorks Project, the Community High School Horticulture Club and many others.

“This community has strong roots in gardening, dating back to the 1870s when John Neltnor opened up nurseries on the east side of town, launching a profitable fruit, flower and vegetable garden business. When West Chicago became home to the Ball Trial Gardens in 1933, the community was put on the national and then international gardening map as Ball Horticultural Company grew, “ said Sara Phalen, Director of the West Chicago City Museum and member of the America in Bloom committee.
