District 33 Announces the Departure of Superintendent

West Chicago Elementary District 33 announces that Superintendent Dr. Charles Johns has accepted an offer to serve as the superintendent of Glenbrook High School District 225. After five years of service in District 33, Dr. Johns will begin his new position on July 1, 2019.

"The past five years have been some of the best years of my professional life," said Dr. Johns. "I have deeply enjoyed the opportunity to work with a wonderful team of educators who are delivering excellence for the students and families of our community.” He continued, "I am deeply proud of the way that we bring together Strong Schools, Strong Families, and Strong Community to ensure the well-being and success of our students." "I am completely certain of the positive direction of the district and that the district has the right leadership team and personnel to keep our trajectory of success going well into the future."

During Dr. Johns' time in the district, there have been a number of programmatic improvements. With a firm focus on the best interests of all students, Dr. Johns has led the district to concentrate on student growth and outcome as critical indicators of success. These changes have included expanded early childhood learning opportunities, implementation of a comprehensive one-way and two-way dual language program, expansion of Gifted and Talented programming, implementation of Professional Learning Teams and numerous curricular improvements. Along with curricular changes in math and reading, the district added a social-emotional learning curriculum throughout the elementary schools that are aligned to programming at the middle school. The continued development of the community schools model that places family liaisons at each school to ensure that families have the linkage and access that they need to help their children best access a high-quality education. The community schools program continues to successfully partner with over 70 area organizations to provide resources to families. Having reached financial stability, the district recently undertook a multi-year facilities plan that
improves instructional spaces, building systems, and technology centers. This summer the remodeling of technology and library spaces will continue as well as heightened security measures across the entire district. There has been a four-fold increase in technology accessibility for students as well as improved access and breadth of technology-based learning opportunities. At that same time, he has worked to develop the whole child by overseeing the expansion of extra-curricular opportunities in sports, clubs and the performing arts including Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico. There have been four successful contracts negotiated in the past five years and several critical positions have been added to improve areas of need throughout the district. Student growth levels have grown steadily over the past five years and in the 2018 Illinois Report Card, all District 33 schools earned a “Commendable” rating.

“We are very grateful for the time that Dr. Johns has worked in our district and are very proud of the accomplishments in the district during his time. Dr. Johns has led the district into the right direction and we appreciate what he's done for students, our faculty and our community,” said Board of Education President Gil Wagner. "While we will certainly miss him, we wish him the very best and know that he will find continued success in his new district " The District 33 School Board will review leadership options over the next few weeks. The Board is clear in its intent to ensure high-quality leadership in District 33's next leader.
