Torrijas (Spanish Cinnamon Toast) - Traditional Spanish Recipe

Torrijas (Spanish Cinnamon Toast) - Recipe by Albert Bevia @ Spain on a Fork

When Easter comes around, torrijas are found in just about every bakery in Spain. Torrijas are very similar to french toast, expect they are cooked in a different way. This simple torrijas recipe hails from the roman times, and later became popular during the lent days, as people ate torrijas and drank wine, representing the body and blood of Christ. Traditionally, this is not a breakfast dish, even though you could (and should) serve it for breakfast. Watch our video below on how to easily make this Torrijas recipe and celebrate the great flavors of Spain all year-round. Salud!

Ingredients

  • (1) Baguette
  • (1) Cup Milk
  • (1/2) Cup of Sunflower Oil
  • (1) Tbsp Sugar
  • (1) Tbsp Powdered Sugar
  • (1) Tsp Cinnamon Powder
  • (1) Vanilla Bean
  • (1) Cinnamon Stick
  • (2) Eggs
  • Lemon Peel

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes

Instructions

  1. Using a small sauce pan, add 1 cup of milk, 1 tbsp of sugar, a vanilla bean, a cinnamon stick and some lemon peel
  2. Mix everything together and turn on your fire to a medium heat
  3. Once the milk begins to lightly boil, turn the fire off
  4. Using a sieve, pour in the milk mixture into a casserole dish
  5. Grab a baguette and cut it in 1-inch thick diagonal slices
  6. Using a small bowl, beat 2 eggs
  7. Grab a medium sized frying pan, turn your burner on to a medium heat and add 1/2 cup of sunflower oil
  8. While your oil is heating add the slices of bread to the casserole and coat them well with the milk
  9. Once all the slices of bread are well coated add them one by one to the egg mixture and coat with the eggs
  10. Once your oil gets hot, add the slices of bread to the pan in batches
  11. Cook each side of the bread for about 2 minutes
  12. After 4 minutes of cooking, transfer the fried bread slices to a plate with a paper towel and then to a new plate
  13. Grab a small bowl and add 1 tbsp powdered sugar and 1 tsp cinammon powder and mix together
  14. Using a sifter add the sugar and cinammon mix and sprinkle on top of the fried bread
  15. Enjoy!
