City of West Chicago Cancels Special Events on City-owned Property Through 2020

West Chicago, Illinois: August 21, 2020 - The City of West Chicago has announced, by Proclamation issued on August 12, 2020, the cancellation of all festivals and events on City-owned property through December 31, 2020. The decision to cancel was based on the significant and continuing health threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the ever increasing number of COVID-19 cases and the increasing positivity rates in the City.

The Proclamation also encourages that other organizers, of both indoor and outdoor events on private property, take like action in cancelling such gatherings.

“It is a painful decision to have to make,” said Mayor Ruben Pineda. “Nobody loves a festival more than me, but nothing is more important than the health and safety of our residents and visitors. This decision was made in everyone’s best interest.”

According to Mayor Pineda, City staff is working on related virtual programming as an alternative to the live events, to keep the community engaged and offset some of the disappointment caused by the cancellations. The cancelled events include the Mexican Independence Day Festival, the West Chicago Food Festival, Halloween Festivities including the downtown Trick or Treat, and Frosty Fest.
