HEALTHY WEST CHICAGO ORGANIZES FREE YOGA CLASS TO PROMOTE LOCAL HEAL & WELLNESS

After a long day, a gentle yoga practice is the perfect way to unwind.

Certified yoga instructor Tracy Leach has partnered with Healthy West Chicago to offer an evening yoga lesson on the lawn of the West Chicago Library at 118 W. Washington Street, as part of Healthy West Chicago’s “Yoga on the Lawn” series. This free event is offered TUESDAYS, June 8 – July 27, 2021 at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.

Yoga is soothing for the body and the soul. From easing stress to improving flexibility, yoga has long been championed as an ideal way to practice the mind-body connection and wellness. Moreover, yoga has been proven to lower cardiovascular risk factors, making it a heart healthy activity according to the American Heart Association.

Instructor Leach expands, “It’s important to know that yoga is for ‘anybody’, slowing down your mind to connect with your body through breath. Simple stretches paired with a natural breath pattern – that’s yoga! For the more advanced yogi, the option to deepen your practice with more advanced postures is available. Yoga can be many things, but the best is that you can make it your own.”

Community members gather on the lawn of the West Chicago Public Library for Yoga on the
Lawn, a free series of classes provided by Healthy West Chicago.

All levels of yoga practitioners are welcome to learn about the benefits of yoga. The yoga sessions will include simple breathing exercises and gentle postures to foster a healthier mind and body. All the yogi needs is a mat and bottle of water.

“The beautiful thing about yoga is that anyone can practice and there are so many amazing benefits,” said Carly Smitherman, Program Administrator for Healthy West Chicago. “Research has shown benefits from stress relief and help with chronic disease management, to improving quality of life. Join us on your mat and let us help you improve your health.”

All in-person classes are limited due to social distancing guidelines at this time. The Library lawn will be marked with spots six feet apart for participants’ ease. The Library will be closed during class times, there are no bathrooms on site. Participants should wear a mask to class on day one, and will be required to sign a waiver for participation.
