NEELA MYERS NAMED SEPTEMBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH

West Chicago Community High School has selected Neela Myers of West Chicago as Student of the Month for September 2023. Myers was selected by her teachers who said, “I met Neela in Honors Geometry her freshman year during remote learning. It was a tough way to start high school but she excelled and showed a high level of resiliency during a tough time. Neela loves a good challenge and I knew her strong math and problem solving skills would be perfect for the math team. She is very proactive in her learning and takes ownership in everything she does.”

Myers, a senior, has been on High Honor Roll every semester at WCCHS, earning a cumulative weighted grade point average (GPA) of 5.575. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Music Honor Society, received the WeGo Voices Award and was recently named a PSAT-NMSQT Commended Scholar.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being

recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

She is an Ambassador, the current President of Student Council, the founder of Climb Club, a member of the Jazz Band, Badminton team, Math team and WeGo Buddies.

In her spare time, she gives back to organizations including the Northwestern University Brain Awareness Outreach, Turner Elementary School, the Special Olympics, the West Chicago Neighborhood Food Pantry and more. Myers also works as an aid for special needs children in summer camps and other programming through the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association.

My favorite high school memory is marching band camp because it allows everyone to make new friends even before school begins, and it gives us the opportunity to enter each year in a fun and energetic environment.”

Myers has this advice for future Wildcats, “You don’t always have to take ‘No’ for an answer. There is usually another way, and if one path gets blocked, take another until you reach your destination.”

After graduation, Myers plan to attend a four-year university and obtain a degree in Neuroscience, eventually aiming for a Ph. D, then research privately or through a university for the NIH, focusing on neurological diseases.
