GETTING READY FOR SNOW: IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR RESIDENTS

The City of West Chicago encourages residents to be ready and informed when snow enters the area. Below are some friendly reminders about the City’s snow removal policies and procedures to help everyone stay safe and prepared.

Snow Removal Guidelines

To help keep everything running smoothly during snowy weather, there are a few simple guidelines to follow. Please note, not following these guidelines could result in fines or fees, as they’re part of the City ordinances.

  • On-Street Parking: Parking on streets is restricted when there’s two inches or more of snow. This helps our snowplows clear the streets effectively and keeps traffic moving.
  • Snow Removal: For everyone's safety, please avoid shoveling or plowing snow from your driveway or sidewalk into the street.
  • Curbside Objects: To ensure snow removal goes smoothly, please avoid placing ornamental rocks or other objects along the curb that could get in the way or become a hazard.

City Snow Removal Procedure

The City is divided into seven snowplow routes, ensuring that a snow removal truck is always working during a snowfall. Snow removal is prioritized in the following way:

  • Primary Roadways: These are the main roads that are frequently traveled and used to get in and out of the City. They’re cleared first to help keep traffic moving smoothly during snowfall.
  • Secondary Roadways: Side streets, alleyways, and local roads leading to homes are cleared after the primary roads. During larger snowstorms, side streets may not be plowed until the snow stops. In the meantime, City crews will work to make them passable, but it might take a little extra time to get them fully cleared.
  • City Sidewalk Snow Removal: The City only clears snow from sidewalks in front of municipal buildings and along the A. Eugene Rennels Bridge.

Additional Helpful Reminders

  • Mailbox & Property Safety: The City isn't responsible for damage to mailboxes that aren't properly installed or damaged by snow from plows. Please make sure your mailbox is securely set up and ready for winter!
  • Stay Informed, Stay Prepared: Preparing ahead for winter weather helps limit unnecessary travel. Stay informed by following trusted sources, like the National Weather Service, for updates on potential and on-going adverse weather conditions.
  • Help Clear Fire Hydrants: If you’re able, please help clear snow from fire hydrants near your home. A clear hydrant can make a big difference in an emergency.
