FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING UNDERWAY THROUGH END OF OCTOBER

City crews are currently flushing fire hydrants throughout the City with work continuing through the end of the month, weather permitting. Crews are focused on hydrants on dead-end lines and areas with lower water circulation. Signs will be posted in neighborhoods prior to flushing so residents know when crews will be working in their area.

Why Hydrant Flushing Matters

Hydrant flushing is an essential maintenance activity that helps maintain West Chicago’s water distribution system. Flushing ensures that hydrants operate properly in the event of an emergency, while also improving overall water quality by clearing sediment from the system.

What Residents Should Expect

During flushing, you may notice discolored water in your home. Even if flushing is not happening on your street, nearby activity may still affect your water.

  • The discoloration is temporary and does not pose a health risk.
  • Before doing laundry, check your water to avoid staining clothing.
  • If laundry does become stained, do not dry the items—this can set the stain.
