KIDS CAN CAST A LINE AT FREE FISHING DERBY JUNE 14

Young anglers can reel in big fun at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Just for Kids Fishing Derby on Sunday, June 14, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Silver Lake in Blackwell Forest Preserve.

This free event is open to kids 15 and under. Participants will compete for prizes in four age groups by catching the largest fish in three species categories. Forest Preserve District staff and volunteers will be on-site to offer tips and tricks for fishing DuPage waters.

“The best part of the derby is seeing kids spend a morning outdoors, away from screens, learning something new, and having fun,” said Ranger Operations Manager Marty Jandura. “It’s a simple way to unplug, recharge, and make memories with family and friends.”

Registration is available online, by calling 630-933-7248, or in person the day of the event. There’s no capacity limit, and kids can drop in anytime during the event.

Participants should dress for the weather and bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray. They’re encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, but a limited supply of gear and nightcrawlers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents may assist, but children should do as much of the fishing as they’re able based on their age and ability.

Visitors can enter Blackwell off the north side of Butterfield Road (Route 56), 0.25 mile west of Winfield Road and 1 mile east of Route 59. Parking is available throughout the preserve.

The Forest Preserve District offers fishing at more than 30 lakes and ponds and along 45 miles of rivers and streams. Visit dupageforest.org/fishing for maps, regulations, and species information.
