Fair housing is the right to choose where you live and enjoy your home without illegal discrimination. Federal fair housing law protects people from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. Illinois law provides additional protections. These protections apply to renting, buying, financing, and other housing-related activities.
Housing discrimination can take different forms and may not always be easy to recognize. It can include being denied housing or offered different terms because of a protected characteristic, being directed toward or away from certain neighborhoods, or being denied certain disability-related housing rights.
