SBA Extends Small Business Size Standards Comment Period

What's happening: The U.S. Small Business Administration recently extended its comment period for proposals concerning size standards and its revised size standards methodology to November 20, 2026.

Why it matters: Size standards play a central role in determining whether small businesses can access federal contracting opportunities and other programs intended to foster their growth and participation in the economy.

What we did: The U.S. Chamber filed comments ahead of the original deadline. We applauded the SBA's effort to expand small business eligibility for federal contracts and requested bifurcation between federal procurement and other valuable SBA products and services.

What we're telling partners: Federation members are urged to encourage small businesses to engage directly. Specifically, firms should:

  • Examine how the proposals will impact their NAICS designations
  • Provide constructive comments on a preferred size for that particular NAICS

How to comment: Find the proposals at regulations.gov and search by docket number:

  • Size Standards Methodology → Docket No. SBA-2026-0265
  • Size Standards Proposal → Docket No. SBA-2026-0199

The bottom line:
This extension is an opportunity. Local chambers should be reaching out now to small businesses that may be affected — and those businesses should be writing directly to SBA with specific, constructive input before the November 20 deadline.
